Hey, I'm Max! This is a metal plate with sand sprinkled all over it, and underneath it there is a speaker playing one note. Turn the frequency dial and watch. For most notes, nothing much happens. The sand just sits there and shrugs. But keep going, because at certain special notes the whole plate wakes up, the sand jumps into the air, and it lands in a pattern. A star. A flower. A snowflake. Here is the secret: the sand is running away from every part of the plate that is shaking, and the only places left to land are the lines that are holding perfectly still. So the sand is not drawing the sound. It is drawing where the sound is not. There are twelve patterns hiding in this dial.
